U Stand Out: Social Media: Top Twelve Reasons to Twitter

  • Cheap Phone Calls · 11 months ago
Sounds brilliant. I had a play on Twitter a few months back and it kind of just slipped past me, I didn't think it was going to be that big. I have been proven wrong, so it's time to reclaim my account!

I would say my main reason is networking with like minded individuals. I have met so many cool people as a result of using Twitter.

I would also note that about 6% of my web traffic comes from twitter and I rarely tweet my own links. So this means people that are curious are proactively clicking through to my blog. Kind of a cool side benefit.

I might have to give it a try now. I really couldn't get past the creep factor before. The problem now is that it's blocked by our firewall at my office...

I wish more people I knew used twitter, as it seems like one of those things that is better for people that one knows in person than trying to find new people for.

By the way, I was just looking at your page on Blog Catalog and I noticed that you are in Cambridge (close to where I go to school... across the river) and that your major is also the same as mine... advertising.

I was wondering how that is working out for you. The major, I mean.

I have a Twitter account, but have not been using it quite as well as you have described here, thank you. I had not heard of Zappos.com, must be an American brand I guess, so I took a peek at his site

Having been brought back to this post - the problem is knowing how to split your time and you friends on all of the verious "Twiter" type sites including Stumble etc. as there are so many of them!

This is a great post Diana. Thanks for sharing it. I'm a twitter user who has no products or services to sell. I was inundated by marketers when I first got a twitter account. I was also inundated by followers who spent all day long informing each other about what they were eating and where they were.

In these days of economic distress and no more easy credit there are fewer people who are responding to advertising in the print media. The overkill of advetising on billboards, buses, businesses etc. has led to a rebound reaction of "advertising blondness". People are meeting in social networks and the business people and marketers are following them there intent on marketing to them. I'm not a consumer drive materialist and I am "advertsing blind".

I assessed twitter's value to me as a social networking tool with regard to promoting my own posts. I assessed the noise to sound ratio and then I dumped hundreds of followers, who use twitter to create a false authority based on broadcast range, as opposed to creating authority based on quality of contents in their posts, the number of comments they receive, their ability to create a blog centered community of faithful readers (subscribers) and I protected my tweets.

I use my twitter account to chat with freinds. And I use it to let them know when I publish a post. I am willing to re-tweet their post publication tweets to me and they are willing to do the same for mine. That's where it ends. I refuse to spend hours of every day creating false authority by establishing a huge broadcast presence based on a huge number of pseudo-freinds.

I discovered your website on Blogcatalog, I've just asked you a question in one of the forums.

Good list Diana but I still have no idea what to say on Twitter. I signed up and thought what now?
I am not interested in hearing what other people are eating or going to the supermarket to buy so I am not sure if Twitter is really for me.

How did you start using it?

    Good website, I'm subscribing.

@ timethief Thank you for a very insightful comment! I know that some people's solution to the Twitter noise is to have two accounts: one to promote their blog, follow/get followed, get links to followers' blogs, etc., and another for friends-only. Even though many people retweet and link to other people's posts without having their own content, I still find their links useful and their opinions valuable. It's all a matter of being picky about who to follow.

@ Michelle, your comment inspired a blog post! Hopefully it can answer your "what now" question. http://ustandout.com/index.php/social-networks/...

    Hi,

I've read good things about Twitter but I'm not there and I don't know if I ever will.
I'm just not the "follower" kind of guy, although there are quality blogs that I follow.
Building my opinion based upon my beliefs is one of my characteristics.
Of course that if I should guess that Twitter would get me lots of traffic to my blog.... :-)
From all the strategies and social websites, together with lots of blogs that practically say the same thing, in my opinion it's quality and relevant content, mixed with a good dose of creativity that helps to an organic growth of a web presence.

    Have a great week,

    José

Great article! Will pass it along to my blogger friends who are still a little reluctant to open a Twitter account.

I liked the 12th reason- Not too time-consuming. I used to read news and blogs on Google reader. With Twitter I 'follow' websites and bloggers to see the latest updates.
